Blueprint for Learning was privileged to welcome renowned journalist, author, and presenter Patrick Gower as a guest speaker at this year’s Kaiwhakaako (facilitator) Symposium.
Known for his distinctive communication style and ability to engage communities on complex and often challenging issues, Patrick has spent years facilitating important national conversations through his journalism and documentary work. From hosting Paddy Gower Has Issues to creating the acclaimed Patrick Gower: On… documentary series, his work has explored topics that deeply impact people across Aotearoa.
Documentaries such as Patrick Gower: On Weed and On Booze combine rigorous journalism with deeply personal storytelling, including Patrick’s own experiences with addiction and mental health. His willingness to speak openly and authentically about these experiences has helped create meaningful conversations and challenge stigma.
During his session with Blueprint kaiwhakaako, Patrick brought warmth, humour, and honesty to the virtual room. Alongside stories from his journalism career, from chasing politicians around the Beehive, and reporting from war zones, to interviewing global figures such as Donald Trump, he shared valuable insights into connection, communication, and trust.
Patrick also spoke about his approach to interviewing, explaining how he frames questions to encourage thoughtful responses and create genuine connection. His kōrero highlighted four key themes: the power of connection, optimism, purpose, and believing in the ability to change.
For many kaiwhakaako, his message strongly resonated with the work they do every day in communities across Aotearoa.
As one facilitator reflected following the session:
“Paddy sharing his journey with addiction and the four pou that he now lives by was inspirational and hopeful. It was a great reminder that the work we do is also this for many of the people who come to our workshops.”
Patrick’s session was a powerful reminder of the importance of authenticity, empathy, and hope in creating meaningful learning experiences and supporting positive change.
